Cutting out a person or object on a Mac does not require extra software. Starting with macOS Ventura (13), Finder runs a Quick Action that strips the backdrop from one or several images at once. The Photos app copies a figure straight to your clipboard. Keynote’s Instant Alpha makes a single colour vanish with a drag. All three tools work automatically. This article covers how to use each one, and when a browser-based remover such as removebg.pictures delivers a cleaner edge.
Finder Quick Action Remove Background
In macOS Ventura (13) and later, Finder can remove a photo background directly. The command lives under Quick Actions.
How to use it
- Open a Finder window and locate the image file.
- Right-click the image.
- Choose Quick Actions > Remove Background.
- Finder creates a new cut-out file in the same folder. The original stays unchanged.
Select several images and apply the Quick Action to all of them. The tool finds the main figure and deletes the surroundings. The result is a new file with a clear background. To keep it clear, save as PNG. JPEG fills the removed area with white.
Copy Subject in the Photos App
On macOS Ventura (13) and later, the Photos app copies a figure without its background.
Steps to copy a subject
- Open Photos and double-click the photo.
- Hold the Control key and click the photo, or right-click it.
- Select Copy Subject.
- The figure lands on your clipboard, background gone.
- Paste it into a Keynote slide, a Pages document, or an image editor.
You get a clean cut-out ready to place on a new backdrop. The selection is automatic. You cannot nudge the edges. To keep the result as a standalone image, paste it and export as PNG.
Keynote Instant Alpha
Keynote and Pages include Instant Alpha. Drag across a colour and it vanishes. This works when the backdrop is a solid or near-solid colour, such as a white or blue studio background.
How to use Instant Alpha in Keynote
- Open Keynote and insert the image.
- Click the image to select it.
- Find the Remove Background button in the toolbar. It may sit under Picture or Image settings.
- Click the button, then drag across the colour area you want gone. Keynote makes that colour clear.
- Adjust the tolerance slider if the result needs fine-tuning.
Instant Alpha fails when the background has many colours or a gradient. For a complex scene, the automatic selection eats into the figure or leaves patches behind. After removing the background, export the slide as PNG to lock in the clarity, or copy the image and paste it into another app.
Saving Transparent Results as PNG
All three built-in tools produce a cut-out with a clear background. To keep it clear, you must save as PNG. JPEG does not support clarity and fills the removed area with white.
- Finder Quick Action: the new file saves automatically. Check the extension. If it is PNG, the clarity is preserved.
- Copy Subject: after pasting, export the document or image as PNG.
- Keynote Instant Alpha: export the slide or the image as PNG.
Limitations of the Built-In Tools
The built-in tools pick the main figure automatically and offer little manual edge refinement. No brushes, no lasso, no feathering. The consequences are real.
- Fine details, hair, fur, or translucent objects get clipped or carry unwanted background fragments.
- Finder’s Quick Action processes each image independently. You cannot correct a bad cut.
- Copy Subject in Photos gives you one copy. No going back to tweak the selection.
- Keynote’s Instant Alpha handles solid backdrops well. Gradients or busy scenes defeat it.
For a quick cut on an image with a clear figure against a plain backdrop, these tools work. For more control, you need a different approach.
When an Online Remover is the Better Fit
If the built-in tools leave you with a ragged edge, a browser-based remover delivers a more precise selection and manual touch-up tools. Reach for one when:
- The image has a complex background with many colours or patterns.
- The figure has fine edges, like hair or fur, that automatic tools butcher.
- You need to refine the selection edge by edge.
- You are processing many images and want consistent results without rework.
A browser remover such as removebg.pictures processes the image with a stronger algorithm and often lets you clean up the result. Download the cut-out as a clear PNG. Because it runs in a browser, there is nothing to install, and it works on any version of macOS, not just Ventura and later.
Choosing the Right Method for Your Work
Match the tool to the image. Use Finder Quick Action when you have one or several images with a clear figure and a simple background. Use Copy Subject in Photos to grab a figure fast and drop it into a presentation. Use Keynote’s Instant Alpha when the background is a single solid colour. For everything else, especially images with fine detail or complex backgrounds, a browser remover gives you more control and a cleaner final result.
