To remove a background in GIMP, add an alpha channel, select the background, and delete it. Every tool covered here, from Fuzzy Select to Foreground Select, is built in. No plug-ins. No subscription. The steps follow the exact menu paths and keyboard shortcuts so you finish fast and export a clean PNG with a clear background.

Set Up the Alpha Channel

Before you delete anything, the image must have an alpha channel. Without it, pressing Delete fills the area with the current background colour. Go to Layer > Transparency > Add Alpha Channel. Do this for every image you open, even a new file. Once added, a checkerboard pattern appears behind your layer, showing where the canvas is see-through.

Use the Fuzzy Select Tool for Solid Backgrounds

The Fuzzy Select tool (keyboard shortcut U) selects contiguous areas of similar colour. It works when the background is a single colour or a smooth gradient. Click the background. The tool grabs all connected pixels that match the colour you clicked. If the selection spills into the subject, lower the Threshold in the tool options to tighten it. This is the fastest route to a GIMP transparent background when the subject stands clearly apart from the backdrop.

Select by Color for Disconnected Background Areas

The Select by Color tool (Shift+O) handles a background colour scattered across multiple separate areas, like a blue sky seen through tree branches. It selects every pixel of a similar colour across the entire image, not just connected zones. Click the background colour. All matching pixels get selected. Adjust the Threshold to include or exclude similar shades. Use this for product photos shot against a coloured backdrop where the subject interrupts the background in several places.

Foreground Select Tool for Complex Edges

When the Background Is Busy

For hair, fur, or intricate edges against a busy background, reach for the Foreground Select tool. It separates a subject from a complex background using a two-step process:

  1. Draw a rough outline around the subject with the lasso mode. Keep it loose. This tells GIMP where the foreground and background are likely to be.
  2. Paint brush strokes across the subject (foreground) and across the background to refine the separation. The tool uses these strokes to calculate which pixels belong to the subject.

Press Enter to finalise the selection. No external plugin is needed. This is the best choice for GIMP foreground select tasks on portraits or furry pets.

Delete and Refine the Selection

Clean the Edges

Once the background is selected, press Delete. The checkerboard pattern appears where the background was. Rough edges or background fringes need two quick fixes:

  • Select > Shrink removes a few pixels from the selection edge, cutting away any background halo.
  • Select > Feather softens the selection edge by a pixel or two, blending the subject into the clear area.

Apply Shrink before Feather. A value of 1 or 2 pixels is enough. This sequence is a standard part of any GIMP fuzzy select delete background workflow and produces a natural-looking edge.

Export the Image with a Clear Background

To keep the clear background, save in a format that supports an alpha channel. JPEG does not. Use File > Export As (Shift+Ctrl+E) and type a file name ending with .png. In the export dialog, confirm the option to save colour values from clear pixels is checked. It is on by default. Click Export. Your image now has a clear background and can sit over any design or website.
